How does Boy Scouts work?
· Boy Scouts works differently than Cub Scouts in that Boy Scouts are “boy led”, not “adult led”, because the boys are older & we are training them to be leaders. The adults in Boy Scouts are there for teaching, advice, & supervision.
· Boys will advance at their own rate (not all together as in Cub Scouts). It is up to each Scout to work toward his own advancement. (Remember, the adults are there in an advisory role, not as Den Leaders.) Scout advancement lets them move ahead in their own way & at their own speed. Rather than competing against others, they challenge themselves to as far as their ambition will carry them. Their rate of advancement depends upon their interest, effort, & ability.
· The boys advance in rank from:
1. Scout (not actually a rank, but the first badge to be earned)
2. Tenderfoot
3. Second Class
4. First Class
5. Star
6. Life
7. Eagle · The boys may pass any of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, & First Class at any time. For example, if they fulfill a First Class requirement before they are a Second
Class Scout, they may check off the First Class requirement as completed. Troop 921 is participating in the “First Class, First Year” program.
· Boys are grouped into Patrols. Each Patrol will elect a Patrol Leader every 6 months. Each new Patrol will also be helped by a Troop Guide (an older experienced Scout) & an Assistant Scoutmaster. The new Patrol will need to decide on a name, make a Patrol flag, & come up with a Patrol yell.
· One of the Scouts will be elected every year as the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) of the Troop. The Patrol Leaders of all the Patrols make up a Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) along with the Scoutmaster & other Troop Leaders.
· There are many leadership positions that the boys will be elected to hold over the years. These include, but aren’t limited to: (See pg. 172 of handbook)
Senior Patrol Leader (SPL)
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL)
Patrol Leader
Assistant Patrol Leader
Troop Guide
Quartermaster
Den Chief
Chaplain Aide
Scribe
Librarian
Historian
Order of the Arrow (OA) Representative
Junior Assistant Scoutmaster
· Order of the Arrow (OA) is scouting’s national honor society. (See pg. 426 of handbook)
· Earning merit badges is required with the “buddy system”. No Scout is ever to meet alone with anyone. There are over 100 merit badges available (see BSA website for complete list). Some have prerequisites that have to be done before work on the badge begins. The boys can find more information under the "Advancement" menu.
